The deputation was introduced by the Registrar General and its object was to request my serious attention to a memorial signed by no less than 1176 of the principal Chinese residents, complaining of the evils resulting from the great increase of late years in gambling and in the number of sly brothels. Dr. Hokai read a lengthy address in which he entered into these subjects more fully than in the memorial itself, copy of which is annexed, and also referred to the daily increasing nuisance caused by the obstruction of streets and thoroughfares by the stalls created by hawkers. This is a point specially referred to in Mr Chadwick's report (paragraph 270).
The Honourable F.B. Johnson who accompanied the deputation expressed the sympathy of the European residents with the complaints of the Chinese Community, and stated that if longer notice had been given other Europeans would no doubt have
